PEN-15 are extremely proud to announce the release of our third album, Leave Home.

"But wait, you only JUST released Reckoner?!" we hear you say. Hey, The Ramones released their second and third albums in the same year, so if it's good enough for The Ramones, it sure as shit is good enough for us!

Drawing upon punk, metal, and pushing our musical boundaries even further, Leave Home is everything you love and more from Detroit's Baddest Bitches™. 

You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll want to stomp around and tear the place down 'cos PEN-15 will get you the fuck up!

Leave Home will be released on all major digital platforms on Friday September 26th.

Album #3 photoshoot update

Hey y'all,

Hope everyone is doing good and staying safe.

As Mercedes said, we did the cover shoot for #3 yesterday and it's looking absolutely killer. Our friend/stylist/photographer Marie knocked it out the fucking park with sprucing us up so big shout-out to her and to Kate for being a massive help with everything also. It was the best seeing my girls too 🖤

We're just going for a pretty straightforward cover this time. We had a ton of ideas (including some WILD retro sci-fi thing, complete with Kirby crackle - maybe one day!) but it felt like we were trying too hard to better the last 2, so in the end we just decided on a straight to the point band photo (and as it turns out, us looking fucking fantastic, if I do say so myself). Also, it saves me staying up late tearing my hair out doing artwork for once, so I'll take that!

So yeah, nearly at the finish line for #3 - real fucking excited! 

Not gonna lie, on a personal level this has been a pretty awful week, but I at least put some of that time spent not leaving my apartment to good use and started work on some PEN-15 t-shirt designs. No promises, but we'll see. And thank you again to Mercedes and Suze(!) for picking things up on here this past week.

Have also started reading The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir. Did not notice the edition I'd ordered is nearly 800 pages of pretty teeny print, so will have to see how my dyslexic ass fares with that one... Maximum effort, though.*

Just a quick wassup to say yoooooo an that mixing + mastering for #3 is going good! Suze is doing her thing all day n night and I think most tracks are done now. Photos are lined up now too and we r aiming to be in a good place by the end of the month 🤞🏻 

Full disclaimer I'm doing a post cos Ivy's not doing so good this week so she asked me to + explain why. Like seriously, bpd is HORRIBLE an it breaks my fuckin heart seeing when she gets bad like this. She'll be her usual funnest happiest person then someone will do something that utterly destroys her inside and then all that happiness is GONE. Like I've never seen a person get so sad an it is SCARY. She has so much love to give + I just really wish people would stop treating her like shit. She's the kindest most generous kick ass person an absolutely does not deserve to feel like this. Sending you lots n lots of love Ive 💚💚💚

Ivy fail English? That's unpossible

People might have noticed so just wanted to give some background on my... occasionally weird pronunciation/mangling of words on some of our songs. 

So basically, English isn't my first language. I grew up in Southwest Detroit, and in our house we primarily spoke Spanish. My parents were rightly very proud of our Mexican heritage, and so that was reflected in our home life. Not in a bad way, it's not like we were ONLY allowed to speak Spanish, and I was obviously taught English as well, it's just Spanish was the default.

Once I went to school I obviously started speaking English a lot more, and eventually became properly bilingual, but even now it's still like my brain is hardwired to Spanish? 

So what happens is, sometimes when I'm singing, even when it is the very words that I myself have written with my own cold, dead hands, it's like my brain momentarily just totally malfunctions, trips over itself, and quickly gets back up only to find itself suddenly wearing a poncho and big sombrero. Yes, it's a very lazy stereotype, but that's honestly the best way I can visualize what it feels like.

I think throwing being ADHD as fuck and whatever else into the mix probably has a lot to do with it too. I wasn't diagnosed with ADHD until much more recently in life and so didn't get any support or acknowledgement around that growing up, which I think definitely affected things developmentally. I'm pretty smart and could do well at school, but I was also a little shit. Being that as it may, times when I was playing up as a result of ADHD issues will have just been lumped in with me being an absolute fucker. 

Anyways, where was I...

Yeah so basically I think from combination of even though I speak English, my brain is Spanish, and said brain is also a hot mess of ADHD and a dazzling array of other neuroses. It's not just singing either, I randomly do it while talking too. My siblings don't have any kind of language issues, so maybe I was dropped on my head and my mom never told me? 

I mean take Lars Ulrich though. He's lived in the US most of his life but he still has a really distinctive accent that's not totally, for the want of a better word, "American", and he still has a real twang on the way he pronounces words. If it's good enough for Lars, then it's good enough for old Ivy fucking Fernandez. Also, my English-speaking accent is as American as fucking apple pie, so I got that going for me at least 💅🏻🥧

Whatever the hell is happening up there in that brain of mine, I just do the best with what I got. Fuck me, it sure ain't easy sometimes, but I try 🤣

So after this long-ass explanation, you may still be wondering "but why oh why do you leave all those goofy pronunciations on the recordings, Ivy?". Sometimes, no matter how many takes, I just cannot for the fucking life of me say the damn thing right - once I've done it wrong, 2/3 of the time it's game over. Bless her, Suze has the patience of a god damned saint but even she needs to go home and sleep at night! Other times... we just think it's funny so leave it in. 

Either way, we've never cared about being perfect, and we wear things like this as a bit of a badge of pride that, past being Detroit's Baddest Bitches, we're an authentic set of goofballs ☺️

She basically said it all but I too am fucking STOKED for our new album 👊🏻 some real cool + gnarly stuff on there that's gonna hit you over the frickin head. Hahahha I get to do a ton of screaming on it too, I love it!

 A bit of a rundown on where we're at right now... 

Our second album Reckoner came out in June. We technically had it almost finished in the tail end of last year, but a power cut totally screwed a hard drive and we lost a shit-ton of work, had to re-record a bunch of stuff. Whilst we're super proud of eventually getting it out the gate, on top of a ton of personal real life stuff we were all dealing with, along with the existential nightmare that was (is) the political climate in the US, that time of our collective lives was NOT fun. 

As the album was effectively delayed, around the downtime of redoing the mixing etc we actually started writing album #3 and that's well underway now. Thankfully, it's been a much more positive experience. Is the album positive though? Erm... kind of? 

Politics and collective personal experiences definitely had a massive influence on Reckoner. We wanted #3 to be a bit lighter and fun, and the first half definitely is at least(!). On a personal level though, early this year I was diagnosed with BPD. While I can write the dumbest of dumb songs, I also deal with my trauma and various demons through my writing. The second half ended up picking up on that a lot, so while the first half of the record is bouncy and fun, the second half mayyyy have collectively ended up being a hell of a lot darker than what was on Reckoner... If I do say so myself though, it 100% fucking slaps, so there's that 😂

Really excited for people to hear it. We always want to try different stuff on each record, flex our creative muscles and whatnot, and I can proudly say we have gone all in on that. We're a little older, maybe a little wiser, and we've had such an amazing time bouncing off each other and trying new stuff. Massive props to Suze too because she has done a fucking fantastic job on getting it all together and making it sound kick-ass. Love all my girls and it encapsulated exactly why we're in this band and the absolute bestest of friends.

Anyways, will post more stuff as we go but I guess that's about it for now!

Hey (ho. Let's fucking go)

What up? 

So we've set up this blog to keep people in the loop what we're up to and such. A couple of things though...

Firstly, people might wonder why don't we have any social media? Because tldr we all think social media sucks, basically. Growing up as four young women we experienced first hand the abuse and misogyny that was brought merely from having any kind of online presence. While it CAN be a force for good, social media is by and large a total dumpster fire, and we don't have the time, patience, or sanity for dealing with any of it, thank you.

As for shows, not going into details but we have our lives, we're private people, and we're happy just being friends doing our music together as an escape from our real lives, simple as. While in theory we'd love to, the practicalities to be a DIY band right now is otherwise borderline ridiculous. 

In summary, we're just doing our own thing, doing everything on our own terms, and just enjoying it. 

Hope that helps clarify and hopefully you can just enjoy our own particular brand of Bad Bitch Punk Rock 😋🤘🏻
